On 2 November 2000, Blunkett met some of us professors for dinner at the Institute of Education in London. When the news of Woodhead’s resignation was announced, we all had another drink. Even David’s guide dog seemed inebriated!

6In 2010, the journalist and writer Fiona Miller, formally an aide to Tony Blair’s wife Cherie, set up a Local Schools Network, with contributors supporting their local schools and opposing academies and “free” schools. The government then set up a New Schools Network, to support the “free” school programme. Fiona chaired the organization Comprehensive Future for years, a later chair being Melissa Benn.

7This claim was repeated frequently, including by Bill Clinton in the United States and David Cameron in England. What failed in northern towns by 2001 was a labour market where major textile firms such as Courtaulds had closed down, leading to the unemployment of many skilled workers.
